I9 killed, five injured in Plateau attack

Spokesman of Plateau State government, Dan Majang in an interview with Saturday Independent said the state Governor Barr Simon Lalong has gone into dialogue with warring groups and security agencies and they are on top of the situation at Bassa Local government Gouncil in the state.

He directed law enforcement agencies to apprehend the perpetrators of the Plateau killings and their sponsors irrespective of their social or political standing.

Aruku said the attackers are suspected to be Fulani Herdsmen and the attack one of reprisal.

Meanwhile, apprehension has gripped the people of Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State following the killing of 20 people in Anchan community in a midnight raid by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen.

"The various communities in the state have taken many steps, with the support of security agencies and mediators, to pull the state back from the brink of anarchy and senseless killings warranted by attacks and counterattacks", the statement read.

Plateau State Police Command Public Relations officer, DSP Teryina Tyopev, confirmed the attack but told New Telegraph that he was at the scene of the attack and promised to give details later.

"We have been told that a Fulani boy resident in the village was reported missing on August 3".

"Of the 19 people who died, 13 are adults comprising of seven males and six females, while six are children", he added.

The attack is coming exactly 16 years after the September 7, 2001 attack that killed more 1000 people and property worth millions of naira destroyed.

He said that the attack was believed to be a reprisal because it came three days after the body of the missing Fulani boy was found. The eyewitness said attack is suspected to be in retaliation of an earlier dispute between the herdsmen and members of the community.

Atolagbe during a meeting with the youths on Friday urged them not to take laws into their hands as security operatives are investigating the attack.

According to him, " The attack, Thursday night lasted hours".
