Haley: 'Plenty' of military options available for dealing with North Korea

By very publicly demonstrating that he not been deterred by Trump's warning of "fire and fury" if he threatened the US or its allies, Kim has challenged the US President's ability to draw clear strategic red lines and to follow through on his warning of a military response to the young autocrat's repeated provocations.

North Korea fired the intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan that landed in the Pacific, responding to new United Nations sanctions with its furthest-ever missile flight.

As president-elect, he called the United Nations.

North Korea on Friday fired a missile which flew over Japan, but resulted in Japanese citizens being told to take cover. "And at that point there is not a whole lot the security council is going to be able to do from here when you have cut 90% of the trade and 30% of the oil", she said.

The three global goals Trump will emphasize on the visit are "peace", "prosperity" and "sovereignty", McMaster said.

"President Moon ordered [the military] to closely analyze and increase the readiness posture against new types of threats from North Korea, such as EMP [electromagnetic pulse] and biochemical threats", presidential spokesman Park Su-hyun said. South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who ran on a platform of improved relations and expanded dialogue with Pyongyang, said after Thursday's missile launch that "dialogue is impossible in a situation like this".

Responding to a question, Mattis said he is not aware of any effort on the part of South Korea to shoot down the North Korean missile. "We must make North Korea understand this", Abe said. The North Koreans must have been confident that their latest test - an audacious advance by some 1,000km on their earlier (29 August) overflight of Japan - would be successful and that the risk of the missile breaking up over Japanese airspace was minimal.

"We call on all nations to take new measures against the Kim [Jong Un] regime", the top USA diplomat said. "China and Russian Federation must indicate their intolerance for these reckless missile launches by taking direct actions of their own", Tillerson demanded.

In a unanimous statement backed by China, the council said the launch was carried out just three weeks after a first missile overflew Japan and less than two weeks after Pyongyang's sixth and biggest nuclear test.

The latest missile test raises therefore important questions about the credibility of United States extended deterrence and the protective strategic umbrella that America provides to Japan and South Korea.

"The Trump administration intends to change that". Some 25 million people live in the metropolitan area of Seoul, U.S. ally South Korea's capital, well within range of the North's extensive artillery.

More specifically, China and Russian Federation want the U.S.to accept North Korea's demand to cease joint military exercises with South Korea to bring the Kim regime to the negotiating table.
