There are footballing reasons to start Philippe Coutinho against Sevilla on Wednesday, with the player having played 30 minutes for Brazil twice over the recent worldwide break and while perhaps not ready to go the full 90 minutes at least ready to play 60 should Jürgen Klopp decide to start him.

The news of his illness comes just hours after he told of his excitement at the prospect of the clash with Sevilla, who beat Liverpool in the Europa League final a year ago. The wantaway Brazilian is yet to feature in a competitive match for the Reds this season after being denied a move to Barcelona despite submitting a transfer request.

"The No.11 was absent as the Reds continued preparations for the opening game of their Champions League group-stage campaign ... on Wednesday night", Liverpool said on their official website on Tuesday.

Mohamed Salah is a minor doubt after being sent home from training today with a sore throat but Klopp has suggested the Egyptian global should be fit to start against Sevilla.

Georginio Wijnaldum will be among those looking to improve on an abject display in Saturday's 5-0 loss to Man City, with the Dutchman in poor form at Anfield.

"I'm very, very excited to start the Champions League games at Anfield", he added. "He came back from a long flight, after two substitute appearances and three weeks without training".

The Wales global has been named in Steven Gerrard's U19s squad for the UEFA Youth League, with the young Reds taking on their Sevilla counterparts at Prenton Park on Wednesday evening.
