Charges Being Considered For Justine Damond's Killer

Damond family attorney Bob Bennett said the family believed the officer should be held accountable.

He has previously told News Corp that he would consider a murder charge against Noor, but a second degree manslaughter charge is more likely.

The Australian woman was shot dead by a police officer, Officer Mohamed Noor, outside her home in Minneapolis in July after calling 911 to report a suspected assault in the alley next to her house.

A decision is expected by the end of the year.

Damond's fiance, Don Damond, released a short statement saying, "The wait continues for Justine's family and me".

His partner, Officer Matthew Harrity, has told investigators that he heard a loud bang before Noor fired across him and hit Damond in the abdomen as she approached their police vehicle. He says the family hopes that Freeman will "act swiftly to review the findings and determine charges".

The fallout from the shooting also led to the ouster of Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau, who'd been out of town at the time of the shooting and was criticized for not returning quickly enough.

"They certainly believe charges are merited", he said in a telephone interview with Reuters.

Minnesota's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has handed over its preliminary investigation to the Hennepin county lawyer, who will now decide next steps.

In a statement Tuesday, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said his office has received the case and "several senior prosecutors will now carefully review the case file to determine what, if any, charges might be brought".

"As is often the case in these types of investigations, the county attorney's office will remain in contact with the BCA and may ask for additional investigation during this review".

Harrity and Noor were placed on paid administrative leave following the shooting, pending an investigation, as is standard.
