A deal involving Sterling could hold the key to Sanchez's future as Wenger could then be prepared to sanction a transfer for the Chilean star to recoup some money before he becomes a free agent in the summer, as per the Mirror.

The England winger was forced to seek assurances last month when Arsenal requested him as a potential makeweight in the failed negotiations to bring Alexis Sanchez to the Etihad.

Apparently, Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho will attempt to lure the 28-year-old to Old Trafford, however, might still be required to cough up £25 million for his signing on fee.

Though Guardiola described the prospect of a swap deal as "zero chance" earlier this month, the Citizens may be forced to consider the offer as it would pave the way for Sanchez's departure amid interest from both Chelsea and Manchester United in the ex-Barcelona and Udinese hitman.

City tried to get Sanchez in the summer but had a final bid of £60m rejected.

City are confident of signing Sanchez on a free next summer but they may feel that interest from their rivals means they must shell out in the winter rather than risk waiting until the end of the season.

Neville believes such a move would make sense, with a club of United's stature and ambition needing to be in the market for the cream of the global crop.

"Ultimately he is still building up his fitness, he's still not in the team".

"What it showed for Arsenal on Sunday was that if you get players who work together and stick to a game plan, you can perform, sometimes better than with players who have got more talent. He needs to get back to doing that for Arsenal first because they've got big games coming up".
