Hey there, San Diego readers!

"Annabelle: Creation" is technically, if not quite thematically, the fourth film in the somewhat vaguely-defined "Conjuring" franchise.

Kids in peril are a classic and reliable tool for filmmakers to scare the heck out of viewers and Annabelle: Creation shows it still works with children being terrorized by the dark forces attached to the home.

Miranda Otto is stuck with the role of simpering wife and mom to their little girl who meets a tragic accident, and whose tormented spirit is hijacked by the devil who uses one of the dolls to get a foothold on earth. They soon become the target of the doll maker's possessed creation, Annabelle. We can assume Creation's budget lands somewhere in between that of Annabelle ($6.5 million) and The Conjuring ($20 million), putting it on the lower end of horror film expenses (September's It is considered a "big-ish" entry with a budget around $35-$45 million, according Forbes' Scott Mendelson).

Collaborating with Sandberg behind-the-scenes from his Lights Out team are production designer Jennifer Spence, editor Michel Aller, and composer Benjamin Wallfisch, joined by director of photography Maxime Alexandre (The Other Side of the Door) and costume designer Leah Butler (Paranormal Activity 3 & 4). "Annabelle: Creation" continues the tradition by giving the Mullins house some nifty features - a dumbwaiter, a crawl space, a hidden closet - and incorporating them into several effective scenes of tension and terror.
