United States will not pre-emptively strike North Korea without informing Seoul

Guam, a 210-square-mile island, is a USA territory in the Pacific Ocean. "They are here to protect the islands, just in case something happens".

Naval Base Guam is an important outpost for USA fast-attack nuclear powered submarines that are a key means for gathering intelligence in the region, including off the Korean peninsula and in the South China Sea where China has been building military bases on man-made islands that have stirred tension across Asia. The United States has been threatened via a direct threat to Guam, which isn't just a host for Air Force and Navy bases.

Ryu Yong-seok, a market analyst at KB Securities Co., said North Korea risks could continue to weigh in the main index, though there are no negative factors that could undermine South Korea's economic fundamentals.

That puts its total population of 170,000 in range of the Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missiles that Kim Jong Un's regime has threatened to fire as a counter-punch to President Donald Trump's warning that the US would respond with "fire and fury" to provocative actions by North Korea. The air base was built in 1944, when the US was preparing to send bombers to Japan during World War II. Most recently, in March 2013, North Korean military officials made a statement about Andersen Air Force Base being within "striking range". Japan selected the U.S. Air Force's KC-46A Pegasus tanker in 2015.

"North Korea must make the right choice now and go for denuclearization", Cho added, suggesting the door for dialogue remains open between the two countries.

The naval base dates to 1898, when the USA took over Guam from Spain after the Spanish-American War.

In addition to the military presence, Guam also relies heavily on tourism to boost its economy, attracting more than 1.5 million visitors drawn to its pristine beaches and luxury resorts in 2016. Pyongyang has laid out plans to strike near the USA territory of Guam. Guam stayed under naval rule until 1950, when the Organic Act made Guam a self-governing territory of the USA and its residents became US citizens.

In the fact sheet, Guam authorities advise residents to stay inside "the nearest building, preferably built of brick or concrete", for "at least 24 hours unless otherwise told by authorities".

He said: "We are with you a thousand percent". Chamorros are the indigenous people of Guam. North Korea this week threatened to create an "enveloping fire" around the strategically important Pacific island, located about 2,100 miles to its southeast.

Trump told reporters from the clubhouse of his Bedminster, New Jersey golf course that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un "has been very threatening beyond a normal state, and as I said they will be met with fire and fury and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before".

Guam is armed with the U.S. Army's defense system known as Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, which can intercept missiles.
