Two US soldiers killed, five wounded in internal incident

Two American troopers have been executed while leading battle operations in Iraq, the US military said Sunday, including that "underlying reports demonstrate the occurrence was not because of foe contact".

In a statement, the USA -led worldwide coalition Operation Inherent Resolve said initial reports indicated the incident was not due to contact with enemy forces; it is under investigation. The incident is still under investigation.

The slain troops were part of the so-called US-led coalition, which was formed in 2014, with a purported aim of fighting the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group in Iraq but it was later expanded to include territories in eastern and northern Syria.

Coalition commander Lt. Gen. Stephen Townsend iissued a statement offering condolences to the families, friends and comrades of the service members. "I hope there is some small solace in knowing their loss has meaning for our country and all the nations of the coalition".

As of June, there were now around 6,100 USA military personnel on the ground in Iraq as part of the multinational campaign to eliminate ISIS, according to the Department of Defense.

Iraq's prime minister, Haider al-Abadi, declared victory against the Islamic State in Mosul in July, and Iraqi forces are now preparing to retake the Islamic State-held town of Tal Afar.
