The pleasantries, however, soon evaporated as Mr Turnbull firmly pushed Mr Trump to accept the Nauru-Manus Island refugee deal Australia struck in 2016 with then United States president Barack Obama.

"I hate taking these people", Trump continued.

"Putin was a pleasant call".

"Putin was a pleasant call", Trump said later in the conversation.

The funding "will work out in the formula somehow", Trump said, adding later that "it will come out in the wash, and that is okay".

"I do not want any more San Bernardino's (terror attack) or World Trade Centres ..."

"You can decide to take 1000 or 100".

The Washington Post's explosive report also detailed Trump's conversation with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto in which he begged him to stop saying his government would not pay to build a border wall "because I can not live with that". "And I think that's good advice for anyone whatever you are doing, don't give up".

'That is why they are in prison right now. They are basically economic refugees from Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. He explained that they were being denied entry into Australia due to a policy aimed at discouraging human smuggling.

TRUMP: Mr. Prime Minister, how are you? "It is entirely up to you", Mr Turnbull said. "Who are they? Where do they come from?' Mr Trump asked, before questioning if a refugee excepted into the country could 'become the Boston bomber in five years".

"I have had it", Trump said. "You can not say that to the press because I can not negotiate under those circumstances", Trump told Pena Nieto, according to the transcripts. "I have had it".

There's the US President, who campaigned on banning an entire religion from entering his country, looking at Australia and saying we're worse than him.

Mr Trump fired back: "It is important to you and it is embarrassing to me. I will be there again and again".

But the transcripts do not indicate Mr Trump hung up on Mr Turnbull. And then in another gratuitous remark he goes on to refer to Putin as a "pleasant call", as if the Russian leader represented some paragon of virtue and courteousness in comparison with a longstanding USA ally.

Do you believe it?

Our greatest presidents were by and large men who kept their private thoughts and feelings to themselves and didn't share them with many others, even while they projected larger than life public personas on the national stage.

A White House representative could not confirm or deny the authenticity of the leaked classified documents, which the Post published in full, to NBC News. It could be individuals within the White House who are out to discredit or diminish their rivals or to advance their own personal agendas amid the cacophony of voices surrounding the President. I think it is quite consistent.

"You are worse than I am", Trump told the premier in a remark apparently meant as a compliment, the paper reported. "These conversations are conducted candidly, frankly, privately". The press is going to go with that and I can not live with that.
