Trump better president than Obama

Madeleine Z Bordallo, the US Congresswoman for Guam, said she was confident US forces could protect it from the "deeply troubling" North Korean nuclear threat.

President Trump tweeted a warning to North Korea on Wednesday morning.

My first order as President was to renovate and modernize our nuclear arsenal.

The contention in these tweets is not based in reality. As president, Trump has shown a distinct capacity for ignoring experts.

The arsenal isn't just smaller in terms of numbers of nuclear warheads.

"My expectation is it will take several more months to complete the Nuclear Posture Review, and the Ballistic Missile Defense Review will follow it, because the second review is actually informed by numerous strategic choices that will be made in the Nuclear Posture Review", said Silva.

"But it is a review, and therefore not in itself a decision to make any actual changes to the American nuclear arsenal", Andrea Berger, Senior Research Associate at Middlebury Institute of International Studies, told BuzzFeed News.

Parts of the president's claims are false. The directive was issued a week after Trump took office, and was preceded by more than a dozen orders on other topics. He's on pace to set a record for golfing days (unofficially estimated at 46 rounds at the 28-week mark compared to a dozen at the same point in Barack Obama's presidency). The Pentagon has said it will be completed by the end of the year.

Similarly, it is also premature for Mr. Trump to consider his proposed 11 percent increase to the National Nuclear Security Administration's budget a fait accompli.

Lewis noted that these reviews have actually generally slowed progress by delaying decision-making. As if they had the Trump insignia painted on them and tourists could pick up souvenir versions in the gift shop off the Trump Tower lobby.

Just as important, there is also no public indication that the nuclear arsenal is suddenly more advanced or stronger than it was decades ago. And even those plans, added Reif, "are still in their infancy".

Could US President Donald Trump's Twitter account be suspended for "threatening violence" against North Korea?

Here's a look at how the US nuclear stockpile has evolved over time, from the Arms Control Association. "Don't put it past him", Trump tweeted on October 17, 2012.
