Shopian encounter: 2 jawans martyred, 3 terrorists killed

Three terrorists were killed in an overnight encounter with security forces at Zainapora in Shopian district in Jammu and Kasmir. A dozen stone-pelting protesters were injured in clashes with security forces in the area.

The fighting erupted Saturday after Indian troops raided southern Awneera village on a tip that at least seven rebels fighting New Delhi's rule over Kashmir were hiding there, said top police officer S.P. Vaid.

The other two slain militants were identified as Umar Majid and Irfan.

Itoo, also spelt as Yatoo, was a resident of Chadoora area of Badgam district. He joined the terrorist group again and was its self-styled chief operations commander.

Khan said the three fighters belonged to the Hizbul Mujahideen group and were from nearby villages.

According to a senior police official, three terrorists were shot down by security personnel and a counter-operation is now underway.

Meanwhile villagers alleged highhandedness of forces and said that forces ransacked their houses. Two-three terrorists are suspected to trapped. Additional security forces were rushed to the area and entire area was sealed to prevent militants to escape from the cordoned off area.

One of the youth with bullet injury was identified as Sareer Ahmad Bhat of Shermal.

A fierce firefight broke out in which three fighters and two soldiers were killed, army spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia told AFP.

"The injured soldiers have been shifted to hospital".

The security forces have launched "Operation all-out" against militants across the Kashmir Valley.
