Rookie Watson gets some limited work with first team

Replacing Savage under center, Watson completed 15-of-25 passes for 179 yards and added a rushing touchdown.

When the Texans traded up 13 picks to take Watson 12th overall in this year's draft, many assumed that the Clemson standout would immediately move into the starting role. For a majority of OTA's and training camp, O'Brien has stayed true to this statement as Savage has taken a majority of first team reps.

- Texans rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson continues to handle everything that has been put in front of him, which includes getting some limited reps with the first team. "Those guys, Tom (Savage) plays obviously with the ones and then Deshaun (Watson), sometimes because of the reps", O'Brien said.

"I think the more reps he's had, the more meetings from OTAs to where he is now, he's a smart kid", O'Brien said.

"Now, I can't control what happens. I'm just trying to improve in all areas and continue to do that".

You also have to remember that Savage is not necessarily playing for his future with the Texans, but rather his future as an National Football League starter.

The issue here is that Savage himself was mired in a quarterback battle with free agent bust Brock Osweiler last season before the team literally gave Cleveland a second-round pick to take him off its hands.

"I think [with] pretty much every team, the backup's going to get reps with the ones", Savage said (via ProFootball Talk). Listen, I'm out there competing and that makes both of us better.

Savage, who has yet to throw a touchdown pass in a regular-season game, is certainly aware that many people outside of the organization would like to see Watson under center when Houston opens the season on September 10 against the Jaguars. "So, we just have to keep going with that".
