Ousmane Dembele to 'remain suspended' by Dortmund amid interest from Barcelona

"Borussia Dortmund have made a decision to suspend Ousmane Dembele from training with the team until further notice", read a statement on the club's official website.

The Bundesliga club rejected an initial bid from Barcelona last week for the 20-year-old, who was one of the stars of the season for the club in 2016-17, as the Liga giants seek to fill the void created by Neymar's exit to Paris Saint-Germain.

Speculation that a move to Barcelona was imminent soon mounted before BVB issued a statement saying a bid had been lodged by the Catalan giants but it did not meet their valuation for a player they signed from Rennes for €15m past year.

"Of course, Ousmane Dembele has the opportunity to exercise individually apart from the group".

Dembele found himself fined and suspended by Dortmund earlier this week when the youngster failed to show for training, in what is being described by some as a move to help force through a transfer to the Catalan giants.

Peter Bosz's men won that game 4-0 but will not welcome Dembele back into the fold for their Bundesliga opener against Wolfsburg next weekend.

Dortmund met with Barcelona's representatives but the Spanish club did not meet their valuation.

La Blaugrana are now chasing top transfer targets Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele, but if the Catalan giants are rebuffed in their advances for the pair, they could opt to turn their attentions to Perisic instead.

Dortmund had expected to bring in substantial funds for striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer but later took him off the market as they said they would not have time to identify a replacement.
