Matic sale to Man Utd could cost Chelsea the league

"Matic knows very well what I think about him - the importance for me about this player, who is a really good player, a top player, very important for our team", he told Sky Sports.

"I heard whispers at the back end of last season that he wanted to go and even if the club can not come out and say too much about that, maybe there was an element of that in play here when this deal went through". He is probably the best in England alongside N'Golo Kante.

"I have to say that it is a unusual move, it really is, to sell to one of your main rivals".

And now Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has suggested that maybe it was not even the board's decision, hinting that Matic may well have forced through the transfer to Jose Mourinho's side.

"There is very rarely such big transfers between champions to clubs that are challenging them and it is a odd move".

Earlier this week, Paul Scholes also admitted to being surprised that Matic was allowed to leave Stamford Bridge and explained what the 29-year-old would bring to the Red Devils. "The idea that he has improved his contract, but not extended, is unusual".

"So there have been a number of things simmering at Chelsea, and I have to say that Chelsea is the type of club that brings that type of tension". So what you sometimes see is that when the manager is in a strong position, they are sometimes brutal with the club.

"Chelsea are weaker than last season - no Diego Costa, no Matic - and I'm concerned for them".

Tottenham Hotspur, for instance, have been lambasted publicly by one of their own players for a lack of ambition; Liverpool's best player has handed in a transfer request; Pep Guardiola has made good signings but apparently still wants more; Arsenal are going through the same mental process they do every year, so no problem there. It is most likely that he will take Matic's place in the Chelsea midfield alongside Kante. In character, experience, but also in performance.

"I think the [Matic] sale at this moment in time, with that Chelsea squad, could cost them the league".
