The casualties were distinguished as his mom, Lynn Reichenbach-Vanderhall, sister, Melissa Vanderhall and a family colleague, Janel Simpson.

A fourth lady survived the strike and is hospitalized. Police said the suspect went to the living room and assaulted his mother, then attacked the other women.

The attack is "possibly domestic", a law enforcement source with knowledge of the incident said. She too was bludgeoned to death using the hammer.

Police said Vanderhall had been kicked out of the house by his mother and was homeless.

According to police, Lynn Vanderhall had an order of protection against her mentally troubled son.

"When he came here last night and it looked like the doors were secured, he became enraged", Fitzpatrick said. In a fit of rage, he went into the garage and found a large hammer.

After the incident, Vanderhall walked out of the home, went back to his vehicle and fell asleep. She was listed to be in a stable condition at a Long Island Hospital.

Police say Vanderhall has a history of mental problems and a rap sheet that includes DWI and sexual abuse charges.

Denis Simpson said his daughter, Janel (pictured, March 2016), had worked late as a secretary at Northwell Health and then went to her friend's house to hang out. At the time of publishing this article, it was not known whether he had an attorney.
