The Chile worldwide has been linked with a move away from the club this summer with less than a year remaining on his current deal at the Emirates Stadium and could walk away for free at the end of the upcoming season.

Alexandre Lacazette marked his league debut for Arsenal with a goal on 94 seconds only for Shinji Okazaki to level less than three minutes later.

Heading into the game, Arsenal had won just one of their previous seven opening day fixtures but Welbeck was pleased with the spirit shown to turn this clash in their favour. I thought the ball would go out as it was flying over me and suddenly there was a player.

"I opened the door for him, because I knew we had many strikers, but he's really loved here and he chose to stay". He adapts slowly to the way we want to play.

Wenger, who has plenty of attacking options in his squad, added: "It's a long time since we had so much quality".

Unfortunately for the 31-year-old and his team, it was the only time they would cross the line in the game - the Tigers running away winners 23-4 in the match to comfortably sit ten points clear at the top of the UK Super League table.

But the French coach knows he has work to do on his defence after Friday's performance in which Arsenal were found wanting at two set pieces that resulted in Leicester goals. He hasn't given me one problem where I've had to take him to one side and say, "Oi, pull your finger out".

The Frenchman, who has been at the club since 1996, has been given a chance to turn things around despite calls for his head from disgruntled Arsenal fans waiting for a first league title under his stewardship since he led them to the crown in 2004.
