Fatal police-involved shooting in Dyer after chase in IL

"We have certain parameters that we look at when we determine whether or not a vehicle pursuit should continue or should cancel and I will say that the parameters were not met to cancel at that time", said Crete Police Chief James Pauletti.

A chase that started in IL ended in northwest in after an officer fatally shot the suspect, police say.

During a police chase, a man driving a vehicle stolen from south suburban Crete was involved in a hit-and-run in south suburban Sauk Village.

Authorities say the vehicle returned to Dyer, where Coffey was shot by IN officers.

The Lake County Coroner's office said the deceased is a 33-year-old white male. "The officers were trying to break the windows of the vehicle", said witness Ben Dykstra.

Crete, Illinois, Police Chief James Paoletti says his officers chased the auto early Thursday to a church parking lot in nearby Dyer, Indiana, where the suspect acted as if he was going to shoot the officers.

A police spokesman said shots were fired by multiple officers. "But next thing I know, they were shooting and I wanted to get out of the way", Ben Dykstra, whose white sports auto was side-swiped by the suspect in Dyer.

Authorities say a suspected auto thief hit a pedestrian during a police chase in south suburban Chicago that ended in northwestern in where the suspect was shot to death. The pedestrian was transported to Christ Hospital, and the chief was uncertain of the person's condition.

Indiana State Police and Dyer Police spotted the suspect's vehicle in Dyer, according to Kowalski.

Authorities say a pedestrian was hit as police chased a suspected vehicle thief in south suburban Chicago. The driver then stole a second auto and hit a pedestrian near a Marathon gas station. The chase ended in northwestern in and the suspect was shot to death.

A heavy police presence was seen blocking Sheffield Avenue near West 81st Avenue as authorities continued to investigate.

An investigation is underway, involving Indiana State Police, the Lake County Indiana Sheriff's Department, Dyer Police and St. John police.

Chicago television stations are reporting that the shooting happened in IN following a police chase that started in suburbs south of Chicago.

Calls to other police agencies weren't immediately returned.
