Donald Trump 'Locked and Loaded' for Fight with North Korea

Alarm about North Korea has been steadily growing in the past six months, but it took on a new urgency this week, as President Donald Trump ratcheted up his rhetoric and Kim Jong Un promised to strike the tiny U.S. territory of Guam.

Amid this war of words that threatens to turn into a war of a more literal variety, it's worth taking a moment to understand just what North Korea is up to here.

In their phone call, Trump and Xi "agreed North Korea must stop its provocative and escalatory behavior", the White House said in a statement, and reiterated their mutual commitment to denuclearize the Korean peninsula.

"One of the fundamental lessons of that period was that we need to be clear and detailed about what will happen if you do X - so if you do X, we will do Y. And at the same time, we need to be clear on what you can do to avoid those consequences.", said Krejsa.

The hope is that Kim returns to the six-party talks-comprising North and South Korea, Japan, Russia, China and the US -on denuclearization, which ran from 2003 to 2009 before his father Kim Jong Il walked away.

While on vacation at his golf resort in Bedminster, New Jersey, Trump on Friday tweeted further heated warnings to North Korea. He expressed disappointment over China not doing enough in this regard in July.

Earlier this week, CNN and CBS released polls they conducted from August 3 to 6 showing a majority of Americans are anxious about North Korea. Citing U.S. intelligence, the Washington Post has reported that Pyongyang may already have miniaturized a warhead that can fit inside long-range ballistic missiles, like the two it tested last month.

"China should also make clear that if North Korea launches missiles that threaten US soil first and the USA retaliates, China will stay neutral", the editorial read. The isolated nation, earlier this week, laid out a detailed plan to launch ballistic missiles into waters near Guam, a US territory. He added saying China is ready to pay the price, however, the aim of such sanctions should be to bring North Korea to the negotiating table.

The threat itself came after Trump warned of "fire and fury", urging North Korea to abandon its nuclear ambitions.

On Thursday 10 August, the Chinese state-run Global Times said: "If North Korea launches missiles that threaten U.S. soil first and the USA retaliates, China will stay neutral". The missile defense program is meant to shoot down shorter range missiles. He asked not to be named.

But the Kim dynasty has never faced a president as unpredictable as Donald Trump.

Trump also said that if Kim does anything with respect to Guam, or any place else that's an American territory or an American ally, he will "truly regret it and he will regret it fast".

Soon after the United Nations resolution, North Korea accused the US of "trying to drive the situation of the Korean peninsula to the brink of nuclear war", according to reports.

White House Chief of Staff John Kellyspoke separately to Calvoearlier in the day, the read out said.

But he later insisted that "nobody loves a peaceful solution better than President Trump".

In case North Korea attacked the US Pacific military bases, NATO countries will not be automatically involved in the conflict on the current legal basis, a NATO official told TASS on Friday. Pyongyang has laid out plans to strike near the US territory of Guam.

On Friday, North Korea's official KCNA news agency accused Washington of a "criminal attempt to impose nuclear disaster upon the Korean nation".

The war of words has continued between the US and the North over the last week.
