Despite Rhetoric On North Korea, US Military Posture Hasn't Really Changed

It is the second time this week that a key member of the US administration has tried to calm the waters after bellicose comments from the president.

But the tension continued Friday when North Korea said Trump was "driving the situation on the Korean peninsula to the brink of a nuclear war" with his continued rhetoric. "But the last person in the world you want to give a missile with a nuclear weapon on top is Kim Jong Un, given the way he's treated his own people, and what he's said about us".

"You'll see, you'll see".

"The tragedy of war is well-enough known it doesn't need another characterization beyond the fact that it would be catastrophic", he added.

"The UK stands shoulder to shoulder with the tackling this threat and many others". "And I don't think we are".

The tensions between USA and North Korea escalated after Pyongyang tested an intercontinental ballistic missile in July that appears to have the range to hit major United States cities.

But UN Secretary General António Guterres hinted that Trump's remarks risked derailing the diplomatic process. "That's where we've been, that's where we are right now and that's where we hope to remain", he said.

Asked whether Mr Trump's escalating rhetoric was hurting prospects for reviving negotiations, Mr Rycroft said: "What's hurting the six-party talks is the inability so far of the North Korean regime to do what it has to do which is to halt its nuclear programme and to halt its intercontinental ballistic missile programme". The move was condemned by United States, South Korea and Japan.

Diplomats from each country, including US envoy to North Korea Joseph Yun and North Korean diplomat Pak Song Il are maintaining a relationship with each other in NY, fostered as well by outside groups that favor direct engagement. In dealing with North Korea, Acting Assistant Secretary Susan Thornton and Ambassador Joseph Yun have been stellar in helping us develop these policies and carry them out,"Washington examiner quoted Tillerson as saying".
