Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Vice President Mike Pence are among the dignitaries expected for this week's meeting.

Also on the agenda for today's governors meeting - how the senate health care bill will impact their states. The White House had previously spread the word that Trump was ready to pull out of the pact entirely.

Baker said he would love to see other states, as MA has, put a limit on first-time opioid prescriptions and require medical school students and other health professionals to take pain management courses. He told the governors that barriers to trade between the countries kill growth and don't help working families. Numerous meetings will be held at the Rhode Island Convention Center, although some events are scheduled for elsewhere in the city and in Newport.

"On behalf of President Trump, the vice president recognized the importance of the beneficial USA trade and investment relationship with Canada, while expressing the need to work together to address lingering trade disagreements", a White House statement said.

He called Canada America's "biggest best customer" and said it buys more from the USA than China, Japan and the United Kingdom combined.

He focused his speech on the fundamental importance of the relationship between the US and Canada and how he'd like to see "a thinner border for trade, not a thicker one".

"I've still got to come back to my concerns with regard to the Medicaid population", said Gov. Brian Sandoval (R-Nev.) on his way to a private session with Vice President Pence here at the summer meeting of the National Governors Association. He says he and Trump look forward to the Senate taking up the bill as soon as next week.

Under the partnership, CVS will make a $250,000 contribution to the Community Care Alliance, a social services and health care agency also based in Woonsocket, to open and operate the center.

Cooper spoke on the day that USA senate Republican leaders released revised legislation meant to salvage efforts by President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans to dismantle the 2010 Affordable Care Act, former Democratic president Barack Obama's signature healthcare law popularly known as Obamacare.

The National Governors Association is holding three days of meetings in Providence, beginning Thursday.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell released the bill Thursday.

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock, a Democrat, said Republicans in Congress are "still trying to put lipstick on a pig, but guess what? It's still a pig". He says the new plan doesn't do any of that. Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price and other top Trump appointees are outspoken opponents of federal funding for birth control, advocating abstinence rather than contraceptives to control teen pregnancies.
