Rhode Island officials say the first mosquitoes of the year have tested positive for Eastern equine encephalitis virus.

However, no human cases have been reported at this time, the report said.

The positive trap was in the Johnstown, Milliken and Platteville area, said Eric Aakko, Weld County Department of Health and Environment spokesman.

Manitobans can reduce the risk of bites and exposure to the virus by reducing time spent outdoors during peak mosquito hours between dusk and dawn, using appropriate mosquito repellent, and maintaining door and window screens, ensuring they fit tightly and are free of holes.

Last year, 27 people in Weld County were infected with West Nile virus. Of those, fewer than 1 percent develop the severe neuroinvasive form that can lead to hospitalization, critical illness, chronic disability or death. Program technicians routinely trap mosquitoes throughout the county, which are tested for viruses. Check labels for picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol.

Wear long-sleeved shirts, long trousers and socks when outdoors,
particularly at dawn and dusk and in areas with large numbers of
mosquitoes. "We are comparing our storm water drainage maps with the Board of Health maps, to ensure every storm drain is treated with a larvicide which is safe for humans, but interrupts the life cycle of mosquitoes". Empty water from tires, cans, flowerpots, clogged gutters, rain barrels, birdbaths, toys and puddles.
