Opposition's presidential candidate Meira Kumar on Monday said she has requested members of the electoral college to "heed the inner voice of their conscience" and vote in the best interest of the country. "We can't and must not let India be hostage to those who wish to impose upon it narrow-minded, divisive and communal vision", Gandhi said.

All elected MPs and member of legislative assemblies are eligible to vote and elect the successor of Pranab Mukherjee, who demits office on July 25.

As many as 17 non-NDA parties including the Congress, the Left parties, the TMC, BSP, SP, DMK, NCP, RJD, JMM JD-S and NC are supporting Kumar, while the JD (U) is supporting the NDA's nominee Ram Nath Kovind. Firstpost, quoting sources, reports that BJP president Amit Shah had earlier met two senior RSS leaders Bhaiyyaji Joshi and Krishna Gopal to discuss the ruling NDA's candidate, who in return favoured for a candidate belonging to the upper caste and southern India. "We must have confidence in the values we believe in", she added.

Gandhi told ANI, "I will file nomination on July 18".

The Congress chief also stated the constitutional posts of the President and Vice-President have come under a siege at present.

"In this meeting, we held discussions on Presidential elections and the upcoming monsoon session, however, no discussion on Vice President took place", Kumar said.

"This election represents a clash of ideas, a conflict of disparate values". "In these contests, the numbers may be against us". The term of incumbent Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari is ending on 10th of August this year.

However, Gopalakrishna Gandhi also has the dark side filing the mercy petition with the President of India for Terrorist Yakub Memon who was convicted over his involvement in the 1993 Bombay bombings and was later hanged to death in 2015.
