"It quickly became clear that she had no meaningful information", Mr Trump Jr said, adding that the lawyer then began discussing the adoption of Russian children by American couples under a program Mr Putin had suspended.

The president on Sunday said his eldest son was being set up by the Fake News Media.

For almost a full week now, all anyone in the media can talk about is the fact that Donald Trump Jr. took a meeting with a Russian attorney.

Trump has gone through one of the rockiest stretches of his presidency since the disclosure of the meeting in June 2016 between his son and the Kremlin-linked lawyer. The president ended a series of Sunday morning tweets by writing: "With all of its phony unnamed sources & highly slanted & even fraudulent reporting, #Fake News is DISTORTING DEMOCRACY in our country!"

The emails - which the younger Trump published on Twitter, pre-empting their release by The New York Times - were released as the White House contends that investigations of possible campaign collusion with Russian Federation are nothing more than a "witch hunt".

The attorney's focus on the legality of the meeting appeared aimed at moving beyond the shifting accounts of the meeting given by Trump Jr. "If that information was then passed to Trump Senior, which the timing of his draft speech indicates, then there's strong evidence that Senior was also in the know".

The number of people known to be at the meeting also changed over time.

Earlier this week, Donald Trump Jr released emails showing he met with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya during his father's Presidential campaign.

As a lobbyist bridging the worlds of the former Soviet Union and the United States, Rinat Akhmetshin has the reputation of a charming, skillful, behind-the-scenes operator, NBC News reported.

The allegations have cast a cloud over Mr Trump administration since he took office.

Trump, Jr.'s legal jeopardy is also exposing his father.

Though, it is still unclear whether Veselnitskaya actually fulfilled the promised compromising information about Clinton or not.
