Sebastian Vettel Debuts F1's Proposed 'Shield'-Style Cockpit Protection

Vettel will test the shield for several laps in the first part of the practice session.

Sebastian Vettel drove around Silverstone Circuit on Friday with the new "shield" protecting his Ferrari's cockpit, according to Formula One.

The escalating title rivalry between Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton is expected to rouse something of a pantomime atmosphere in central England this weekend when the duo rejoin their battle at the British Grand Prix.

Motor sport's governing body FIA is looking at ways to improve cockpit protection and limit the risk of head injuries, after French F1 driver Jules Bianchi died in July 2015 and British IndyCar driver Justin Wilson died a month later.

Fernando Alonso says he retains an open mind about 'Shield', after the cockpit protection concept made its track debut at Silverstone.

The red cars were beaten by Red Bull in the first session and though they improved to be best of the rest in the afternoon, were still half a second behind the Silver Arrows.

"We'll have a driver meeting now, talk about it and what the opinion of it is and whether it can be improved", said the Spaniard.

"It's agreed to put it [cockpit protection] on the car for next year".
