Ryan Seacrest back as host of 'Idol' when it returns on ABC

Ryan Seacrest will return as host of "American Idol" this season, the current co-host of "Live With Kelly And Ryan" confirmed on Thursday, July 20. The Hollywood Reporterconfirmed that the recently-announced host of Live with Kelly and Ryan will return to his roots as master of ceremonies for the singing competition show that got America addicted to singing competition shows.

It was no secret that Seacrest and the network were both hoping he'd be back as host, with ABC's reality chief Rob Mills saying in May, "I think he can do both; he thinks he can do both, but he's giving it some serious thought". With Kelly and Ryan that her co-host is heading back to the newly revived singing show, and fans couldn't be happier.

"'American Idol' is a pop-culture staple that left the air too soon", Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, said in a news release.

Seacrest hosted Idol from its inception in 2002 to its final Fox installment in 2016.

"Very exciting", Seacrest said on the show after Ripa gave everyone the good news.

Seacrest then compared his return to a couple of 15 years reuniting after a breakup. It's been an incredible journey from day one.

"I've got some big news to announce".

In a prepared statement, Seacrest said, " It's genuinely hard to put into words what American Idol means to me. "He is a natural who has been there from the start, shines on live television and has dominated in every one of his professional endeavors".
