Matic has been unsettled and now, with the presence of Ngolo Kante and Bakayoko in the defensive midfield position, the Serb may see his role in the first team diminishing.

The France worldwide has been linked with both Manchester United and Chelsea this summer, but the former have set sights on other targets including Nemanja Matic.

Matic has been heavily linked with a reunion with former boss Jose Mourinho at the Old Trafford outfit this summer with Chelsea trying to tie up a deal for Monaco's Tiemoue Bakayoko.

Adding to his squad will come as a blessed relief to head coach, Antonio Conte.

The towering midfielder joins Diego Costa in opting not to travel with speculation that the forward is in talks with Atletico Madrid.

Bakayoko first uploaded an emoji-filled tweet on Friday evening indicating he is heading back to Monaco, before following up with another post with the text: "Just 2 days and I already Miss U".

Bakayoko's signing - joining veteran Argentinian goalkeeper Willy Caballero and German defender Antonio Rudiger as new recruits - would not be the last for manager Antonio Conte.

Chelsea will be hoping to push through the transfer of the left-sided Sandro after the departure of Nathan Ake to Bournemouth and the transfer of Nathaniel Chalobah to Watford. The 23-year-old spent last season at Chelsea's west London neighbours and will return to Craven Cottage this term.

Bakayoko is in London and has been documenting his travels on Instagram Stories, in case any Chelsea fans are anxious about the deal getting done.

Chelsea face FA Cup winners Arsenal again at Wembley in the Community Shield on August 6 and open the defence of their Premier League crown at home against Burnley on August 12.
