Beverly Hills Police Department released the following statement: "On July 2, 2017, at approximately 8:00 PM, Beverly Hills Police Department officers arrested a 24-year-old male subject by the name of Romelu Lukaku Bolingoli".

The news comes less than a day after United announced they had agreed a transfer fee to buy the Belgium global forward from Everton, subject to medical and personal terms. The deal will include, or have some relation to, the return of United captain Wayne Rooney to his boyhood club, Everton.

Lukaku will likely be unveiled as a United player in Los Angeles, where he is on holiday with new United teammate Pogba.

Rooney joined United from Everton for £27 million ($45.7 million) on the back of stunning displays at UEFA Euro 2004 and went on to win five Premier League titles, four League Cups and the 2015-2016 FA Cup on his way to a personal tally of 253 goals.

The 24-year-old Belgian, who will transfer from Everton to ManU, has not commented on the matter.

"A further announcement will be made in due course".

Jose Mourinho sold Lukaku to Everton from Chelsea in a £27m deal in the 2014 summer transfer window during his second spell in charge at Stamford Bridge.

The Belgian is believed to be in America, where United will have their pre-season tour, and he is expected to have his medical in Los Angeles. According to British media reports the decisive factor in Lukaku's head being turned towards United and not a return to the club he idolised as a schoolboy Chelsea were Pogba and their agent Mino Raiola.

Everton - who have spent freely in the close season - are believed to have hoped to sell Lukaku for closer to £100m which would have made him the world's most expensive player bettering the £89m that United spent on Pogba past year.
