Dhawan, who has played 23 Tests at an average of 38.52 since making his debut in 2013, is now part of the 16-man squad for the three Tests starting in Galle on July 26.

BCCI's All-India Senior Selection Committee made an announcement on Monday, stating that Vijay injured himself during a practice match.

"Vijay, who suffered a wrist injury during Australia's tour of India, has complained of pain in his right wrist, while playing a preparatory match".

The right-handed opener had missed only one match against Australia out of India's long home season of 13 Tests and had later revealed he had been playing with a fractured wrist.

Dhawan was originally left out of the squad for Sri Lanka despite his impressive form in the Champions Trophy last month, making way for back-up opener Abhinav Mukund. "The BCCI medical team has therefore advised that Vijay should continue his rehabilitation program", he added. He scored 1464 runs, which included four centuries. Following the end of that match, Dhawan sustained a hand injury and did not feature in England and Australia series. Star batsman Rohit Sharma and pacer Mohammad Shami were re-called for the Sri Lanka tour scheduled to be held from July 26 to September 6. The remaining two matches will be played at the historic R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

India, led by skipper Virat Kohli, is also slated to play five one-day internationals and a single Twenty20 after the Test series wraps up. It was India's first Test series win on Sri Lankan soil in 22 years.
