A CCTV grab of the incident showed Adil attacking Riya and she running away from him. However, it was empty and the accused followed her inside and continued to stab her. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she was admitted in the ICU. Her family had alleged that she had filed a police complaint against Khan but no action was taken. The accused Adil had been absconding since committing the murder. Around 5.30 p.m. on Wednesday, she had stepped out for groceries when Khan accosted her around 100 metres from her house. Riya succumbed to injuries on Thursday. Later, she was stabbed by Khan in a busy market. Over two months had passed between the date of complaint and the day of the murder, with the police not registering an FIR during this period. "But when she ignored him, he attacked her", said a police official, quoting a witness. When she ended it abruptly and without telling him why, his friends in Aligarh convinced him that the girl had used him to fulfil her needs. Khan had allegedly been harassing her and would often ask her to talk to him.
