The process took several weeks, and the vice president could have hired nearly anybody, But University of Richmond Law professor Carl Tobias says Cullen is uniquely qualified, "Well, he's been involved in a lot of Washington investigations going back to Watergate, apparently, but more recently he's been the attorney general of Virginia and Eastern District US Attorney and then he's represented a number of people in high-profile cases like Tom Delay and Sepp Blatter and most recently Jeffrey Lacker, head of the Federal Reserve Board in Richmond".

"The vice president is focused entirely on his duties and promoting the president's agenda and looks forward to a swift conclusion of this matter", Pence's communication director Jarrod Agen said.

"It is a problem if a committee is formed and money raised for the expressed goal of supporting candidates and normal political activities", Bauer said, "but the intention is in fact to establish a personal legal expense fund".

Among the questions Sanders deflected Thursday was to whom exactly Trump was referring to as "bad and conflicted people" in one of his early morning tweets.

On Wednesday, the Washington Post reported that Mueller is investigating Trump for possible obstruction of justice in the Russian Federation investigation.

Trump hired his own personal lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, a week ago, and he has been hard at work defending the president with factually inaccurate statements. Flynn was sacked after he lied to Pence and others about not having spoken during the transition with the Russian ambassador about the sanctions imposed on the country by the Obama administration. Every time his opponent, vice-presidential candidate Tim Kaine, brought up a statement by Trump-a public, documented statement, the veracity of which Americans could easily validate-Pence did not embellish. Trump subsequently said he planned to fire Comey regardless.

Mueller was named by Rosenstein on May 17 to lead the Russian Federation investigation as a special counsel, a position created to conduct investigations when a normal Justice Department probe would present a conflict of interest.

The Washington Post, citing unidentified officials, reported on Wednesday that special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating the Republican president for possible obstruction of justice.

As Trump's No. 2 and as head of the transition team, Pence has increasingly found himself drawn into the widening Russian Federation investigation.

Cullen's other high-profile clients include Tom DeLay, the former Republican majority leader investigated by the Justice Department for connections with lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

In the 1980s, Cullen was special counsel to Sen.

Cullen's official biography touts his "extensive experience" defending large multi-nation corporations in investigations and says his counsel to corporate executives and others has involved "matters of the utmost sensitivity, often involving issues of national security".

Pence will not be using taxpayer dollars to pay Cullen, a person close to the vice president told NBC.

Julie O'Sullivan, a law professor at Georgetown University who worked on the Whitewater case, said it is not unusual for individuals in Pence's position to hire lawyers under such circumstances.

"I think based on what he said then, there doesn't appear to be any there there", Cornyn said.
