US Would Welcome Effective Syrian Effort to Defeat IS, Military Says

That incident followed two others involving U.S. fire against pro-regime forces on the ground as they came close to the garrison.

The U.S. -led coalition fighting the Islamic State group said a U.S. F-15 fighter jet shot down the drone "after it displayed hostile intent" while approaching a military camp near the Syria-Jordan border.

The U.S. said the airfield was the base of Syrian planes that used chemical weapons on civilians.

The U.S. needs now to delineate the lines of advance for Syria's Kurds, and to talk to the Russians, Syrians and Iranians.

Both the administration of former President Barack Obama and Trump's have focused exclusively on defeating Islamic State, but with the militants' self-proclaimed caliphate shrinking, US-backed and Syrian-backed forces appear to be competing for territory.

"Australian defence force personnel are closely monitoring the air situation in Syria and a decision on the resumption of ADF air operations in Syria will be made in due course", he said.

On Sunday, a Navy F/A-18-E Super Hornet shot down a Syrian air force SU-22 fighter over the skies of Syria. The Russian defense ministry's statement added that any coalition aircraft flying west of the Euphrates River would be tracked and "considered air targets".

The incident took place after a series of clashes between pro-regime troops and the US-backed anti-ISIS group, the Syrian Democratic Forces, near the SDF-held town of Ja'Din, just south of Tabqah, Syria. Iran-backed militias have repeatedly come under USA fire recently and, in April, Trump ordered cruise missile strikes on a Syrian airfield, ostensibly responding to a poison gas attack.

A spokesman for the Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Ramazan Sharif, said all six ballistic missiles hit their targets, citing "local sources" and drone footage. "We continue to operate, making some adjustments for prudent measures", Davis said on June 20.

Syrian state television, quoting army sources, said they had resumed the offensive, which took place as U.S. and Russian officials were holding another round of secret talks on creating a "de-escalation zone" in southwestern Syria that would include Daraa.

In another first, Iran fired ballistic missiles at Islamic State targets in eastern Syria, in the province of Deir el-Zour, later on Sunday. And now as the conditions deteriorate looks like Assad and his allies are winning, and the USA don't want them to take Raqqa.

Gen. Dunford also expressed confidence that U.S. pilots could take care of themselves. Several weeks later, the U.S. Air Force shot down an armed drone conducting an airstrike against SDF partner forces in yet another example of the counter-ISIS coalition having to adapt to a combat environment that can charitably be described as chaotic.

However, they are also supporting Syrian rebels who have been fighting against Bashar al-Assad.

"It is absolutely illegal", Russian Federation s Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said Tuesday of the presence of American forces in Syria. More recently, relations endured another tense incident, when the U.S.

Syrian and Iranian-backed ground forces also have been gathering in the desert region. He also confirmed that there had been recent instances in which ground-based air defenses were directed at coalition planes.
