Armed police opened fire during two "terrorist incidents" at London Bridge and nearby Borough Market, a popular nightspot teeming with bars on a warm summer evening.

Police said they shot dead three men, who they believe were the only people directly involved in the attack. "The suspects were wearing what looked like explosive vests but these were later established to be hoaxes", he said.

Police say a hit-and-run and stabbings on and near London Bridge have been officially declared a "terrorist incident". "They were scared. The police were scared", he said.

The violence turned a pleasant Saturday night in an area full of bars and restaurants into a scene of panic and chaos, with officers running through crowded streets screaming for people to flee and lifeboats drafted to help clear the area.

About three hours after the initial attacks, three loud explosions were heard near Borough Market.

He added officers were treating the incident as terrorism and additional police would be deployed in the capital.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May said the incidents are being treated as a "potential act of terrorism".

"This is a fast moving investigation", May said.

" May will chair a meeting of Britain's "COBR" emergency response committee on Sunday morning".

The attacks come days ahead of a 8 June election and less than two weeks after a suicide bomber killed 22 people at a pop concert by USA singer Ariana Grande in Manchester in northern England.

The BBC reported that police arrested a man who "was handcuffed and had his shirt off" after the van traveled from central London toward the south end of the River Thames. Two other incidents also are being reported. Meanwhile, however, the authorities announced that the incident was not related to that on the London Bridge. As many as six people were killed and three suspects were shot dead in the attacks.

"We then went or were pushed by the police who were starting to arrive".

U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday offered help to Britain after two attacks in London killed six and injured at least 20. Police have not confirmed this report.
