Not only do they believe Trump fired former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey to save his own hide (vs. for the betterment of the country), a solid majority also think Trump has engaged in activity with Russian Federation that was either illegal or unethical.

For what Mr Comey said would be the first of many times, the President asked him to publicise that he was not under investigation in the Russian Federation probe.

Jones says that while Utahns may not like Trump's style, the Republican president is still somewhat popular in the deeply red state.

While the legal and political implications of the testimony for Trump remain unclear, policy analysts say the event - which has been likened to the Super Bowl - will only hurt Trump's legislative agenda going forward.

"We've already been in contact with him to schedule that testimony", Schiff said.

- He assured Trump several times that he was not personally targeted in the counter-intelligence investigation: "We did not have an open counter-intelligence case on him". "And the president brings in the FBI Director and says 'please stop your investigation.' If that isn't obstruction of justice, I don't know what is".

"My instincts told me that the one-on-one meeting. was, at least in part, an effort to have me ask or my job and create some sort of patronage relationship", Comey writes in his statement. He's got a telescope because he needs it to examine this James Comey document! We simply looked at each other in silence.

In the testimony, Comey did confirm news media reports that the President had cleared the room of everyone but the two of them following a meeting, then had said about the Flynn investigation, accrding to Comey's almost contemporaneous notes: "I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go".

Comey writes up the whole exchange, and concludes: "It is possible we understood the phrase "honest loyalty" differently".

Comey offers only that Flynn is a "good guy". The president did nothing wrong, 32 percent of voters say.

"He then said: 'I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go".

Despite the apparent lack of new information in Comey's prepared testimony, Boltansky said, the hearing would likely confirm the prior opinions of lawmakers and the public. "He agreed, but then re-emphasized the problems this was causing him". In the statement, Comey makes clear that Trump himself was not under investigation in the FBI's Russian Federation probe, at the time of their conversations.

Meanwhile, the president used his Twitter account to name Comey's replacement, former Department of Justice official Christopher Wray.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a Republican presidential candidate, speaks at an education summit in Londonderry, New Hampshire, on August 19.
