A pet company has voluntarily recalled their rawhide dog chew products because they contain a manufacturing equipment cleaning chemical.

United Pet Group is recalling certain packages of dog chews with the American Beefhide brand on the label. Two brands, American Beefhide and Digest-eeze, are manufactured by Salix Animal Health in Deerfield Beach.

Rawhide Chew plants in Mexico and Colombia, as well as a Brazilian supplier, all used an ammonium compound approved for cleaning food processing equipment, but hasn't been approved in the USA for use in making dog rawhide chews. The diarrhea and vomiting is likely the result of the gastric irritation caused by quaternary-ammonium, while it can also lead to a significant reduction in appetite. The primary complaint was a smell.

According to a statement from United Pet Group, "We take our responsibility to pets and their owners seriously and we are continuing to investigate the cause of this problem". They said, "We are implementing changes across the affected manufacturing facilities in order to prevent this problem from reoccurring in the future". "These symptoms may require treatment by a veterinarian depending on severity".

The other brands involved are Healthy Hide, Healthy Hide Good-n-Fit, and Healthy Hide Good-n-Fun, Miami Herald reports. Affected lot codes start with A, AB, AH, AP, AI, or AV. Lastly, the company is also collaborating with retailers to make sure the recalled products are not on sale or in inventory anymore.
