'The offer is this, because it seems in tennis unlike other sports that they're always asking me how I would do - "how would this old bag John McEnroe do against Serena?".

The three-time Wimbledon champion said that he believed his compatriot was the "best female player ever" but refused to call her the greatest of all time outright.

"I don't want anything to go wrong with Serena because she's pregnant", McEnroe said on CBS This Morning. His comments came after the host, Lulu Garcia-Navarro, said Williams could be seen as the "best player in the world" instead of the "best female player".

The 58-year-old's comments sparked a lot of discussion and debate while some deemed them unnecessary as Williams eventually responded to McEnroe via Twitter.

Having won 23 grand slam titles probably gives you more than a little leverage, but Serena was calm and shut McEnroe down politely enough, essentially saying she didn't have time to spend over his speculation about how low on the ranks she would score.

The seven-time Major victor said the best thing Williams would have going for her on the men's tour would be her mental toughness.

"I don't know what to do with a baby", she added. It would be a similar argument to: who would run faster, the fastest woman or the fastest man?

"I don't know what to do with a baby", the athlete told the magazine back in May.

"I think her mental strength alone would see her get the better of somebody like Nick Kyrgios."

John McEnroe has a new book coming out entitled But Seriously.

Ohanian and Williams also appear and a series of black and white photographs, adding to the extremely limited collection public images we've of the couple.

Williams, who is engaged to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, confirmed in April that she was expecting a baby in the fall after posting on Snapchat, and then deleting, a picture of herself in a swimsuit with the caption "20 weeks".

"I would hope that I would win against Serena".

Williams is taking a break from the tennis tour because she is pregnant. "I had planned on winning Wimbledon this year", she confessed.
