Steve Scalise, the House majority whip, headed into surgery at a hospital in Washington at 10 a.m., according to a statement from his office.

Scalise, 51, was first elected to the House in 2008 and served as chairman of the Republican Study Committee, a group of conservatives, before becoming whip in the leadership shuffle that followed the surprise defeat of then-Majority Leader Eric Cantor in a Republican primary.

Following Wednesday morning's shooting during a Congressional baseball practice at Simpson Field in Alexandria, Virginia, lawmakers and others are blaming the horrific incident on hyper partisanship.

"The only chance we had was that shots were returned by the Capitol police", Sen. The bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding, the hospital said in a written statement. He has received multiple units of blood transfusion.

He said the shooting lasted at least 15 seconds and that upwards of 20 shots were fired by a person armed with a long rifle who crouched behind the dugout. A former congressional aide was hospitalized. "Are you friendly?" It turned out that he was a Capitol police officer; he was friendly.

Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent Tim Slater declined to comment on whether the gunman had a vendetta against Republicans.

In 2013, U.S. Capitol Police and Secret Service shot 34-year-old Miriam Carey to death on Capitol Hill after she led them on a chase from the White House with her 13-month-old daughter in the vehicle - a shooting that remains controversial. "We are one family", he said. He had been living out of his van in the Alexandria area in recent months, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

"Suspect believed in custody, " police wrote.

"House Democrats praying for our House GOP [and] Senate GOP baseball colleagues after hearing about the horrific shooting", Rep. Ruben J. Kihuen, D-Nev., wrote on Twitter.

Kinzinger said he attended a meeting with Republicans and Democrats after the shooting, where everyone held hands and prayed.

The change in tone will start in Washington, and it is telling that when Donald Trump was faced with his first challenge, a nation looked to him, and he declined to lead.

All votes in the House of Representatives were cancelled for Wednesday.

"Politics have gotten so personal, so angry", he said. It's got to stop.

Trump, who announced the gunman's death, called for unity.

One witness said she never saw the attacker's face but cowered in fear as the sound of the gunshots appeared to come closer, as she walked her dogs near the baseball field.

Rep. Richard Hudson isn't on the team and was leading a Bible study group when the shooting happened.

An attack on one was an attack on all, Ryan and Pelosi emphasized.

"Quite frankly, it was not only chaotic", Alexandria Police Chief Michael Brown said. But Slater said authorities were still working to determine a motive and had no indication Hodgkinson knew about the baseball practice ahead of time. DeSantis gave a similar account.

Hodgkinson, 66, owns a home inspection business in Belleville, Illinois.

"Let me be as clear as I can be: Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms", Sanders said. Barton said his son, Jack, got under an SUV.

The shooting took place at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, which is across the Potomac River from Washington.

A US Capitol Police officer who was also hurt in the gun attack was also receiving treatment at the facility, situated about three miles northeast of the White House.

"But for the Capitol police and the heroism they showed, it could very well have been a large-scale massacre".

"It was pistol versus rifle along the third baseline just outside the chain link fence and he was ordering us to stay down".

She survived, but six people were killed.

In 1958, the game had temporarily been put to a halt because it had become "too physical", so clearly the game can mimic the floor of congress from time to time.
