Saudi Terror plot thwarted

The plot targeted "the security of the Grand Mosque, pilgrims and worshippers", ministry spokesman Gen Mansour Al Turki told Saudi television.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran once again warns all states and particularly regional countries against this disgusting and sinister phenomenon (of terrorism)", Qasemi was quoted as saying.

Security forces said the operation was planned by three terrorist groups, two based in Mecca and the thrid in Jeddah.

The Interior Ministry said it launched a raid around Jiddah on Friday, as well as two areas in Mecca itself, including the Ajyad Al-Masafi neighborhood, which is near the Grand Mosque.

Saudi authorities have arrested around 40 people, including Saudis and Pakistanis, for alleged extremist links since July previous year, when a suicide bombing near the Prophet's Mosque in Medina killed four members of its security forces.

In Riyadh, the Council of Senior Scholars said it appreciated the achievement of the security forces in thwarting the terror plot.

It said 11 people were injured after the three story-building collapsed after the explosion, five of them police officers.

Five other people were arrested.

The incident happened around the Grand Mosque, where hundreds of thousands of worshippers gathered for early afternoon prayers on the last Friday of this year's Ramadan, the Muslim fasting month.

The Great Mosque of Makkah is the largest Masjid in the world and surrounds Islam's holiest place, the Kaaba, in the city of Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan condemned the heinous terrorist crime in the strongest terms.

He has also offered aggressive comments about the kingdom confronting Shiite power Iran.

Quoting ministry spokesperson Bahram Ghasemi, the official statement from Iran asked all countries to be wary of future terror attacks.

Iraq condemned the failed terrorist attempt and affirmed its solidarity with the Kingdom Saudi Arabia in confronting terrorist groups that target its security and stability.

The Saudi Arabian government has said that the terrorists whose aim was to destabilise Saudi Arabia were getting their instructions from overseas.
