"It's a black spot for Portugal - he had a great game".

An early goal from Cristiano Ronaldo helped Portugal to a 1 - 0 win over hosts Russian Federation in both team's second game of the ongoing FIFA Confederation's Cup.

The Madrid star has been making headlines in recent weeks following accusations that he defrauded Spanish tax authorities out of €14.7million.

The four-time Ballon d'Or victor - the world's highest-paid athlete according to Forbes magazine - has said his "conscience is clear" in the matter but has reportedly threatened to leave Real.

Ronaldo also skipped his media duties after winning the man of the match award following Portugal's 2-2 draw with Mexico, claiming he needed to undergo treatment on a knock instead.

"Very happy for my first goal", he told Uefa.

With the Russians attempting to sit in and deny Portugal space in the middle of the field, Raphael Guerreiro was given just that wide on the left to deliver an inviting cross to the far post, where the Real Madrid striker made the most of defender Fedor Kudriashov's misjudgement to head home.

It was a miserable start for the Russian skipper, who was making his 100th global appearance.

Ronaldo proved the main threat throughout the first half as the hosts offered little going forward, and he tested Akinfeev with a 25th-minute free kick before forcing the keeper to block with his legs seven minutes later.

Five minutes into the second half, Akinfeev came to Russia's rescue as he produced a stunning reflex save to keep out Bernado Silva's header.

However, the hosts were unlucky not to force an equaliser after a string of chances in a strong second-half display.
