Donald Trump Jr. campaigned with Gianforte in the weeks prior to the election, and Vice President Mike Pence recorded robocalls for the candidate. By the time they happened Wednesday, about 73% of the absentee vote was already in, with Derek Oestreicher, director of state elections and voter services telling CNN that the Montana Secretary of State's office had already received almost 260,000 of the total 358,000 ballots that went out. Trump won Montana by 20.6 percent over Hillary Clinton in November. "Not quirky personalities." Quist had the support of progressives like Bernie Sanders throughout the increasingly tight race, but pervasive anti-Trump sentiment has yet to propel him-or other Democrats-into Congress. It also suggests that, despite reports of Trump's lack of popularity, Republicans are still capable of winning statewide office - something that could worry Democrats looking to retake the House and Senate in 2018. Gianforte said through a spokesman earlier this month that he needed more information before deciding whether he favoured the Republican legislation, while on the same day praising the bill during a private conference call, according to the New York Times, which said it obtained a recording of the call.

"Greg Gianforte will be the next congressman from Montana, and Nancy Pelosi and liberals in Washington were rejected again", Rep. Steve Stivers of OH, who chairs the National Republican Congressional Committee, said after the GOP win. The Georgia election was another race where Democrats hoped to pull off a surprise victory, but their candidate fell short of 50 percent in the April primary, forcing a runoff in June. Quist eventually raised more than $6 million but struggled to come back from the early onslaught of negative publicity and advertising.

Gianforte, who will defend the seat during next year's mid-term elections, sounded contrite. He got on me and I think he hit me.

At a little after 8:30, that line was down to just a few people, she said. "We'll keep up the enthusiasm, no question about that". Democrats have held the governorship in Montana since 2005, and one of the state's two US Senate seats since 2007.

Gianforte was charged with misdemeanor assault on Wednesday, the night before the election, after he brutalized a journalist at a campaign event in front of several witnesses. Ben Jacobs. I also want to apologize [to] the Fox News team that was there, and I'm sorry to each one of you that we had to go through this.

Gianforte was charged with assault.

Gianforte told the crowd celebrating his victory: "I should not have responded the way I did and for that I am sorry".

Greg Gianforte was correct in issuing an apology for an alleged assault against a reporter, Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel said Thursday.
