The congressman underwent another surgery Saturday, and the hospital said he was more responsive and speaking with family.

He was one of four wounded by a gunman Wednesday in an attack on a Republican team practice in Virginia.

Scalise, 51, sustained injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding after being shot in his left hip early on Wednesday at a baseball field in a suburb of Washington.

"He remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours", reads a statement provided Thursday by MedStar Washington Hospital Center, the medical facility now treating Scalise.

"On behalf of Steve and our children, I want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes we have received since Wednesday's events", Scalise's wife, Jennifer, said in a statement Friday.

Doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital, where Rep. Scalise is being treated, discussed his condition on Friday saying that they believed he would be in the hospital for a considerable amount of time, possibly weeks. Dr. Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center said it's a "good possibility" that the Louisiana Republican will be able to return to work in his full capacity.

Members of Congress have made a point of showing support for Scalise, who remains in the hospital Thursday night.

Witnesses said the shooting would have been a "massacre" if not for the Capitol Police officers on duty as part of Scalise's security detail and the gunfight that ensued as local law enforcement arrived.

Hodgkinson is accused of shooting at several members of the Republican baseball team that was practicing this week for the annual congressional baseball game played for charity.

On a baseball diamond in Washington, D.C., there was a symbolic gathering of Democrats and Republicans that discarded all partisanship and came together as "Team Scalise". Instead, Torre handed the ball to Capitol Hill police officer David Bailey, who was injured during the shooting Wednesday.

In a statement Saturday, Matt Mika's family says he will remain in the intensive care unit at George Washington University Hospital at least through the weekend.

"I'm hoping, since it's a charity, we'll have more people than we would have had", Williams said, adding that normally approximately 25,000 people attend.

The crowd got to its feet when the announcer mentioned Scalise.

Hodgkinson - an IL home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park - had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.

"By playing tonight we are showing the world that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence or assaults on our democracy", said U.S. president Donald Trump, appearing on the park's giant screen but not attending.
