Real Madrid says it expects Ronaldo to stay with club

Prosecutors accuse the Portugal worldwide of evading tax via a shell company based in the British Virgin Islands and another in Ireland, known for its low corporate tax rate.

Founding partner at law firm Milestone International Tax Consultants Miles Dean said the case was likely to hinge on when income rights were assigned to the company, which he said was likely to have occurred before Mourinho, who previously managed Chelsea and Inter Milan, took a job in Spain.

A Spanish state prosecutor accused former Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho of tax fraud worth 3.3 million euros ($3.7 million) in unpaid taxes on Tuesday. "To this date, neither the Spanish tax authorities, nor the public prosecutor have contacted Jose Mourinho or his advisers who were hired for the inspection process", a statement on the Gestifute website reads.

Mourinho has been accused of two counts of tax fraud - €1.6m in 2011 and €1.7m in 2012.

"I still feel that Real Madrid probably hold all the cards, it'll be down to them and it's still going to be their final decision, he's under contract, so if they decide to let him go because he wants to leave or because of the situation he's in in the courts or whatever it is, we'll see".

Ronaldo denies any wrongdoing but may still reluctantly pay-up in order to avoid any subsequent fines. Sentences of under two years are suspended in Spain providing the convicted has no criminal record.
