The Spaniard returned to the top role at the Santiago Bernabeu in elections in 2009 and picked up where he had left off by breaking the world transfer record twice in a week with the signings of Brazilian Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Perez - who is reportedly dealing with an unhappy Cristiano Ronaldo amid tax claims in Spain - was asked about Madrid's interest in Mbappe and he admitted the LaLiga champions are following the 18-year-old.

Ronaldo is with Portugal at the Confederations Cup in Russian Federation and has not said anything about his future since the A Bola story was published.

Press Association Sport understands Ronaldo feels he has been singled out for disproportionate treatment after prosecutors accused him of defrauding the authorities of 14.7million euros (£12.8m).

"I want to talk with him", the long-serving Real president told Onda Cero. I have made a decision.

Free-spending Paris St Germain have also been linked with a move for Madrid's disgruntled star, who only signed a new five-year contract in November.

Barcelona were also targeted by press leaks surrounding the possible departure of Lionel Messi previous year when he was in the crosshairs of tax authorities.

"But now, in the case of Cristiano Ronaldo, we want to clarify once and for all that this rumour has no basis and must be referred to the realm of the fable".

Perez's opponents have criticised reforms in the club statutes which have toughened criteria for aspiring candidates.

Elected again in 2013, the last four years have been the most successful of the Perez era, with Madrid winning three Champions Leagues and one La Liga title in that time.

Candidates must now have been a member of Real for over 20 years, compared to the old requirement of 10 years, and have a personal fortune of over 75 million euros.
