Reaction: Lakers Draft Lonzo Ball

The Lakers selected Ball second overall in the draft, giving the rebuilding team another promising young guard while setting up a season of intrigue about how Ball - and, by proxy, his father's dominant presence - will impact the NBA's glamour franchise.

"Just joy", Hart said of his reaction when he received the phone call. "It's insane. You can't really tell by my emotion, but I'm feeling good. They just thought pretty highly of that so I was happy (about) that".

This was the third consecutive year that the Lakers drafted at the second highest slot: Russell in 2015, already gone in trade; Brandon Ingram in 2016, seemingly a cornerstone piece under Magic Johnson; and this year's selection, Ball.

Los Angeles used the No. 27 pick, which it acquired from the Brooklyn Nets, on power forward Kyle Kuzma.

Los Angeles then traded the 28th overall pick to Utah for the 30th and 42nd picks, landing Villanova forward Josh Hart and IN center Thomas Bryant. Ball is an incredible ball-handler, is a very good athlete who can finish at the rim, and has deep range on his admittedly awkward jumper (see below).

Remember, Magic and Pelinka are new to this.

The first player taken who had spent two years in college was Duke's Luke Kennard, who went 12th to the Detroit Pistons. We know that the goal here is to compete for championships. "We're looking for co-branding, a true partner".

FILE - In this November 20, 2016, file photo, UCLA's Lonzo Ball (2) walks by his father LaVar Ball, right, to greet family members after UCLA defeated Long Beach State in an NCAA college basketball game in Los Angeles.

Those schemes are a year away from fruition, however. "I think the great teams in today's game, the ball's moving around the perimeter and three-point shots are being made".

Once the dust settled on the trade, players who spent one season in college continued to fly off the board.

"There's something very, very special about his basketball abilities", Pelinka said about the younger Ball. "I think the vision and the abilities that Lonzo has puts him in a class of being a transcendent talent".

However, his father LaVar Ball has made waves across the National Basketball Association and the sports world with outrageous, often times overly confident pronouncements of his sons ability.

LaVar Ball then declared Lonzo would take the Lakers to the playoffs as a rookie.

Based on the Lakers' executive's words and the action of executing on the no. 2 pick, Lavar Ball seemingly helped Lonzo Ball become a Laker far more than he hurt his son's chances. He added, "Right now, I'm hoping [Ball] leads us to a couple of Summer League victories. The right people are in charge". Not to mention a promising position at the end of the first round of the draft where the Lakers can score another quality prospect. He is also an above-average passer. However, that factor obviously did not deter the Lakers from drafting Lonzo.
