Portugal held by Mexico at Confed Cup

Hector Moreno snatched a stoppage-time equaliser as Mexico denied Portugal victory in their opening Confederations Cup match. I want to remind you that Mexico held a control match against the USA national team in the qualification for the World Cup among the countries of North and Central America.

"We could have killed off the match but it didn't happen".

Portugal's triumph at Euro 2016 secured them a place in Russian Federation, where they will be making their Confederations Cup debut against CONCACAF Gold Cup winners Mexico in Group A before facing the hosts and New Zealand.

The second half became more defensive as both sides wanted to protect what they had, and Ochoa produced a huge save from substitute Andre Silva, whose header was heading for the bottom corner, only to be brilliantly scooped away one-handed by the Malaga stopper.

"Hector Moreno's goal handed Mexican football a huge result", he said.

Mexico controlled possession and spent more time in Portugal's area, but the Euro 2016 champions were a constant threat on the counterattack in front of 34,372 fans at the Kazan Arena.

"I would like to say something on behalf of my players".

While control was clearly something to talk about, it's not to say that there isn't a lot to ponder, and if Mexico wishes to go far in this tournament, and even more importantly for next summer, there are still certain places in which they have to improve. There are two games to go and that's why we're cool, we're at ease. Salcedo almost scored on his own net and was mostly at fault for Portugal's first goal of the draw.

He attracted headlines last week after being accused by a Spanish prosecutor of defrauding the country's tax authorities. We have a great chance of winning the Confederations Cup because there are still two [group] games left.

And as a result of that award, he was obliged to attend a press conference and answer questions from journalists.

Silva's first goal with Portugal's main squad was an 86th-minute close-range strike against Andorra, capping a 6-0 rout in which Ronaldo scored four times. Quaresma scores - Ronaldo bursts down the left after Salcedo fails to cut out a crossfield pass. Ronaldo loses the run of things as he brings the ball into the box, but turns out of trouble.

Cristiano Ronaldo and "Chicharito" Javier Hernandez were the stars of the first half, but the second half's two goals were scored by a pair of defenders.

Handling Cristiano Ronaldo is going to be certainly one of the major concerns for the Mexicans and Miguel Layun said only hard work is going to get them the win.
