A two-sentence notice on Niantic's support website hints at a major update to Pokémon Go.

Niantic, Inc."Pokemon GO" closes its gym system.

Following is update posted on Reddit by Niantic Representative: As we get ready to update Pokémon GO, we want to ensure that Trainers have a sufficient heads up that Gyms will soon be disabled so that they can collect their Defender bonus. In its statement, Niantic assured players that the gym shutdown would be making way for exciting new features to the game, though the developer did not mention nor enumerate exactly what features would be making a debut in the mobile title.

If you've logged into Pokemon GO recently, this probably looks familiar to you: as captured by Redditor Mesawesome, gyms have been taken offline for an imminent update. Maybe you're with friends, but there's not that, kind of, connected experience. Many players believe that one of these improvements might be the collaborative features that Niantic CMO Mike Quigley has talked about. Quigley also explained that there are a lot of rooms for collaboration, but did not say anything more.

The move, the developers state, is ahead of a new update that was announced earlier in June.

When the remodeling happens, trainers will not be able to enter gyms and all Pokémon defending each site will have to return to their trainers. This is to allow players to get their defender bonuses.

The game came out a year ago and it available now to download for Android and iOS.
