Federer cruised past lucky loser Yuichi Sugita 6-3 6-1 in the first round, providing the ideal response to a shock defeat against Tommy Haas in Stuttgart last week.

The Swiss top seed, who skipped the entire clay-court schedule in order to be fully fit for Wimbledon, brushed aside lucky loser Sugita 6-3, 6-1 in just 51 minutes, to bring up his 1100th win on the ATP Tour. I appreciate these numbers way more than ever before. "I think I can embrace them more". I am very satisfied with the ending.

Federer good friend and conqueror from last week, Tommy Haas, played his final pro match on grass in Germany. Federer won 90 percent of his first-serve points and delivered eight aces to zero for his opponent.

"I played some good tennis, some nice points", Federer said. I took charge from the baseline and served well. And playing against me, all are always very motivated.

Federer was scheduled to face Lu Yen-hsun on Tuesday but the 33-year-old pulled out with an arm injury, meaning that Sugita was thrust into the main draw.

Third seed Kei Nishikori came up against Fernando Verdasco for the third time in 2017 and maintained his 100 per cent record against the Spaniard, coming from a set down to win 6-7 (7-9) 6-3 6-4.

The seventh-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut beat Carlos Berlocq 6-0, 4-6, 6-2, Robin Haase defeated David Ferrer 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, and Florian Mayer defeated Benoit Paire 6-0, 6-4.

Local hero Alexander Zverev, the fourth seed who has already won three titles this year, made light work of Italian Paolo Lorenzi during a 6-3 6-2 workout, while his older brother Mischa also booked a second round spot with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Lukas Lacko. Zverev will face countryman Philipp Kohlschreiber in the second round.
