Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich on Sunday slammed special counsel Robert Mueller's hiring of 13 more lawyers to expand his Russian Federation probe, suggesting they're Democratic donors whose bias will poison the investigation.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, one of President Donald Trump's top allies, went after special counsel Robert Mueller in a Thursday morning tweetstorm, calling the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director "the tip of the deep state spear aimed at" Trump.

"I said yesterday, you have two more leaks like this, [Deputy Attorney General Rod] Rosenstein is going to have to appoint a special counsel to investigate a special counsel".

The former GOP House Speaker is doing the rounds of TV shows to promote his book "Understanding Trump". "This intensity has been building, I think, since election night".

Gingrich on Friday said Mueller had hired too many "high-powered" lawyers to go home "without a scalp".

I think Trump sits there and says, let me get this straight, I know I didn't do anything with the Russians. A few days later, however, in a May 11 interview, Trump told reporters that he was thinking of the Russian Federation investigation when he ultimately made the decision to dismiss Comey.

Conspiracy theorist and loyal Donald Trump supporter Newt Gingrich is now admitting that the Russian Federation scandal will likely result in people in Trump's circle - maybe even Trump himself - going to jail.

Asked whether Trump was confirming the existence of an investigation into himself using the tweet, Gingrich replied: "I have no idea what he thought he was doing".

'Turns out, even Dianne Feinstein, the ranking Democrat on the (Senate) intelligence committee, says there is zero evidence of collusion. "I don't think that tweet helped him".

"He is infuriated, and legitimately, in my judgment, by this whole Russian bologna", Gingrich said. "Witch Hunt", Trump tweeted.

This comment comes after Gingrich made eye-popping comments earlier in the week in which he accused Mueller of being part of a "deep state" effort to bring down Trump.

"So, do you mean, because I recall--and maybe I'm crazy--but I recall from the time the gentleman came down the escalator until the time he won, he was 24/7 on every television on every network forcing- making one of the head of the networks saying, 'Yeah, it wasn't good for America but it was great for us.' It was all positive until people started asking questions".
