Netherlands backs India's UNSC and NSG bids

"The top priority for both President Trump and myself is to protect our society from global challenges like terrorism - and because our aim is the strengthening of India and the United States of America - two great democracies in the world - friends", Modi said from his podium at the White House Rose Garden.

President Trump was obviously referring to their huge following on online platforms making them the top two most followed world leaders on social media.

"I'm proud to announce to the media, to the American people and to the Indian people that Prime Minister Modi and I are world leaders in social media", Trump said in his remarks at the White House Rose Garden, following his first bilateral meeting with Modi.

He added: "We are believers, giving citizens of our country to hear directly from the elected leaders and from us to hear directly from there". President Trump said: "In just two weeks, you (Narendra Modi) will begin to implement largest tax overhaul in your country's history, we are doing that also by the way".

Modi laid special emphasis on ties between India and the United States and praised the USA as a valued partner. he also asserted that eliminating safe havens of terror and bringing stability to Afghanistan was the major issue that both nations need to address.

PM Modi just concluded his three-day visit to the United States, where he met President Trump yesterday for a series of bilaterals.

Trump and Modi had a working dinner on Monday night, the first time Trump has played host to a foreign dignitary at a White House dinner.

The two Prime Ministers agreed that the bilateral relations between India and the European Union merit increased focus and attention.

"Some people were anxious about the view of an unpredictable Trump", retired Indian diplomat Rajeev Dogra said.

"We will destroy radical Islamic terrorism".

During his day-long visit, Modi will have an official meeting with Dutch PM Rutte and will also meet King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima.

While Trump's relations with some traditional allies had a rocky start, he and Modi appeared to strike up an immediate rapport in their first meeting, exchanging hugs in the White House Rose Garden in front of reporters. "We talked about terrorism, extremism and radicalisation and agreed to cooperate on this", PM Modi had said after the meetings. "When you value something it is obvious that you will take care of what you value", Jaishankar said.

"We consider the United States of America as our primary partner for India's social and economic transformation", Modi said.

Donald Trump gave Narendra Modi a guided tour of his residence quarters in the White House, including Lincoln bedroom.

Modi said battling terror and destroying terrorist hideouts would be an important part of mutual cooperation.

Any differences over issues such as immigration and climate change were kept behind closed doors and they instead vowed to work more closely on issues such as combatting terrorism, the war in Afghanistan and defense cooperation.

Trump then accused India of seeking to profit from the Paris climate accord as he announced the U.S. withdrawal from the deal this month.

The Prime Minister said that he also discussed regional issues, including the situation in Afghanistan and the Indo-Pacific region.

Ahead of the summit, Indian diplomats emphasized the commonalities Modi shares with Trump.

Highlighting that India is a global economic power consisting of 1.2 billion population, he said Indian markets have a lot of potential and The Netherlands have a lot to offer to India.

"We had very much converging viewpoint of what is the problem, let us diagnose the problem".
