Mosquito traps in Canyon, Payette counties test positive for West Nile

The Modesto Bee reported that the dead bird with the virus was found in Ripon, according to the San Joaquin County Mosquito and Vector Control District.

The money for the grant comes from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency's Mosquito Control Grant.

West Virginia health officials say West Nile virus has been detected in a mosquito in Cabell County. In 2016, MS had 43 WNV cases and two deaths.

The Mosquito Control Grant Program provides money to public agencies to minimize the potential for an outbreak of mosquito borne viruses like Zika, West Nile, and La Crosse Encephalitis. "If we respond to a nuisance complaint, our staff members will be able to work with landowners to reduce potential mosquito breeding sites on their property".

"Most people infected with West Nile virus have no symptoms", said Linda Bell, M.D. and state epidemiologist. People who think they may have West Nile virus should see their healthcare provider.

According to the ISDH, West Nile virus can cause West Nile fever, a mild form of the illness, which can include fever, headache, body aches, swollen lymph glands or a rash. This comes after two weeks of steady positive results for virus in almost three dozen samples in the same vicinity.

Exposure to mosquitoes is most common at night and during the early morning.

The department reports only laboratory-confirmed cases to the public.
