Capitol Police said officers who were part of Mr Scalise's security detail returned fire and injured the shooter, who was taken into custody.

Alexandria's Chief of Police Michael Brown said five people were transported from the scene for medical reasons, but he wouldn't provide details on their conditions.

Scalise, the House majority whip, was in stable condition at George Washington University Hospital, according to one congressional aide. "He is grateful for the fearless actions of the U.S. Capitol Police, first responders, and colleagues". "I'm sure they saved - who knows how many lives".

The gunman carried out his attack with a rifle.

Landrieu made a statement Wednesday morning on the day he was set to give a State of the City address, which he canceled because of Scalise's shooting.

The special agent in charge of the FBI's investigation said there was no immediate indication of the shooter's motive, and that it was too early to tell if Republicans were targeted. "He was shot", said Brooks.

Another victim of the shooting was Zack Barth, a staff member for Texas Rep. Roger Williams, Williams said in a post on Twitter.

Trump commended Capitol Police officers who responded to the shooting and other first responders.

Fellow Republican suburban Philadelphia congressman, Rep. Ryan Costello, also missed practice because his missed his ride, a representative told NBC10's Lauren Mayk.

Initial reports said that as many as 50 shots had been fired, but Flake said, "50 would be an understatement". His wounds were not believed to be life-threatening. "And the only reason they were there was because we had a member of leadership on our team".

Democrats were also practicing at another field at a different location, CNN reported.

President Donald Trump says the assailant in the congressional shooting has died from his injuries. His demeanor was "calm", witness Falisa Peoples said.

The annual congressional ballgame was scheduled to be played on Thursday at Nationals Park, home of Major League Baseball franchise the Washington Nationals.

Flake says Scalise was playing second base when he was shot by a man standing off the third-base side of the field.
